St George Council Tree Removal
Do I need to get council approvals to remove a tree in St George?
You must check whether you need approval from your Council before proceeding to remove any trees or native flora, even if it’s on your property. Often, in the interest of tree preservation, St George councils may not allow you to remove a healthy tree without proof that it poses a risk to the nearby environment. For example, you might need to show that the tree has been damaged in a storm, or has developed ‘tree cancer’, which can cause rot, termites and other hazards. In some cases, you will not have to worry about gaining approval. Some species below a certain size may be removed in St George without approval from the local Council.
The St George region of southern Sydney is split into two local government areas: Bayside and Georges River. Each of these have different rules and regulations regarding tree removals and approvals.
This information is subject to change and is a general guide only, please consult your council to ensure you have the right information.
Gaining removal approval in Bayside
You’ll need to gain council approval in order to remove or prune a tree in Bayside, unless:
- The tree is shorter than 3m, has a girth of less than 300mm and a height of less than 1m above the ground.
- The tree is of a species declared to be a noxious weed under the Noxious Weeds Act 1993.
- The fruit plants identified in Schedule 1 to the Plant Diseases Act 1924.
- The species were exempted from the Rockdale Development Control Plan 2013.
Gaining removal approval in Georges River
You’ll need to gain council approval in order to remove or prune a tree in Georges River, unless:
- The tree is less than 3 metres tall;
- Has a circumference of less than 300mm when measured at 450mm above the ground, and;
- Has a branch spread of less than 3 metres.
For trees that don’t meet this criteria in the Georges River Council area, works to any part of a tree, including tree roots, will require approval.
