Wollongong Council Tree Removal
Do I need to get council approval to remove a tree in Wollongong?
Much like the rest of NSW, you’ll need to check whether approval is required before proceeding to remove any trees or native flora in Wollongong – even if the plants are on your property. Unless the tree is exempt, you may need to prove that it poses a risk to the nearby environment in order to gain approval to remove or prune. Common reasons for removal include weather damage, ‘tree cancer’, rot, and termites.
Trees that don’t require approval
In some cases, you will not be required to gain approval to remove a tree in Wollongong. You can prune or remove trees on your property without Council approval if they are on the exempt trees list or have already been approved to be removed or pruned as part of a Development Consent.
Trees that require approval to be removed
You will need permission to prune or remove trees in Wollongong that meet any of the following criteria:
- Are 3 metres or more in height
- Have a trunk diameter of 200mm or more, measured at 1 metre off the ground
- Have branches that spread 3 metres wide or more
- Have large roots that you want to prune
- Are dead or dying.
There are two ways to get approval from Council to prune or remove a tree in Wollongong. Either you can apply for a Tree Management Permit or get permission through a development application.
