Do I need to get council approvals to remove a tree in The Shire?
You must check whether you need approval from the local Council before removing any trees or native flora in the Shire – even if the plants are on your property. If you are required to gain approval, you may need to prove that it poses a risk or danger to people or the nearby environment.
Check whether you need approval by viewing the exemptions outlined in the SSC Development Control Plan (2015). If you need to apply for approval, you must download, complete and lodge an application form. If the tree is on your neighbour’s property, you will need to gain their approval first.
Trees that don’t require approval
You can prune or remove trees on your property without Council approval if they are on the exempt trees list or have already been approved to be removed or pruned as part of a development proposal. You don’t need to gain approval if you wish to:
- Prune 10% or less of your tree’s canopy (this can only be done once in a calendar year)
- Prune a branch from your tree which extends over the roof of a residence
- Clearance prune back to the gutter line of the residence
- In an emergency, you can call the SES to report any damage to a tree.
After confirming the tree has not been identified as heritage significance, you can prune or remove any of these exempt trees without applying to Council.
